Mariette Artine is a multi-media self-taught artist who combines her love of painting with the art of storytelling and performance on multiple platforms.

 

Inspired by the rich colors and textures of her grandfather's art,  she grew up using sketching and storytelling as her expressive language.  At the impressionable age of 17,  Mariette discovered French modern art via her high school art history teacher, and subsequently fell madly in love with Parisian culture during her first travels to France.

As a lifetime student of art history, Mariette sees an inextricable link between the stories and the creative process. Her current body of work is inspired by and pays homage to the French expressionists of the early 1900s.  

 

Mariette is also the creator of the original

"Kiki's Artists & Lovers" Art Tours (TM), where she 

uses herself as the performer channeling "Kiki", a model and muse from 1920s Paris.  Partly performative and partly educational, Kiki, a time-travelling art guide from takes guests on a curated museum tour at major Los Angeles area museums.  Selected art works are presented and discussed, offering unique insights and stories into the lives of notable artists living in France through the various eras.​

Artist Statement:

I am deeply affected by the early French expressionists who sought to use bold colors and unconventional methods to render their emotion onto canvas.  I am also deeply concerned to preserve a certain nostalgia and history from a time and place where art, poetry, literature and theatre converged in a way that was never before seen.  Because I feel so strongly tied to a bygone era of Paris during the early 1900s-this provides me endless inspiration and information in both my visual and my performance art.  At the end of the day I make art to bring people joy.  And right now more than ever, we need to experience more joy in this ever complex and chaotic world.
